Frequently Asked Questions: Home Health
Frequently Asked Questions: Home Health
How do I qualify for home health?
For a patient to qualify for home health, the condition must require the skills of a licensed nurse or rehabilitative therapist. A physician must order home health services and they must be intermittent. These services must be provided in the patient’s place of residence. One of the main criteria for home health is that the patient must be considered “homebound.”
What does homebound mean?
Medicare states that a patient's condition should be such that there exists normal inability to leave home and, consequently, leaving home would require a considerable and taxing effort. If the patient does leave home, the patient may nevertheless be considered homebound if the absences from the home are infrequent or for periods of relatively short duration, or are attributable to the need to receive health care treatment.
Is a nurse available after hours for emergencies?
Yes, Memorial Home Services home health has a nurse on-call from 4:30 pm to 8:00 am.
Will my insurance cover home health services?
Memorial Home Services does accept private insurance plans as the individual plan allows. Memorial Home Services has on-staff insurance specialists who will complete an insurance check on your plan before patients are admitted to the program.
Will Medicare/Medicaid cover these services?
Yes, Memorial Home Services accepts both Medicare and Medicaid payment. Memorial Home Services has on-staff insurance specialists who will complete an insurance check before patients are admitted.
Do I need a doctor’s order to qualify for home health?
Yes, your doctor will have to make a referral to Memorial Home Services for you to receive home health. However, if it is more convenient for the referral sources, we can call the patient’s physician to get the order.
Are personal care services included such as bathing, light housekeeping, meal preparation and laundry?
Yes, home health aides are part of the Memorial Home Services home health program. Home Health Agencies providing care for Medicare patients will provide the assistance of home health aides to assist with personal care. This means that home health aides may make/change beds, bathe, shave, etc. When you are admitted to home health, you will receive the services of home health aides as necessary.
How long may I receive home health services?
Home Health services run on a typical certification period of 60 days, depending on the patient condition and orders. However, length of services is very patient-specific for home health.
How long will it take to receive the services?
After a referral has been made, a nurse will come to the home and complete an evaluation 24-48 hours following the referral.
How often will the nurse and other staff come visit me?
The frequency and duration of visits the nurse makes varies from patient to patient. It is dependent on the seriousness of the condition, the doctor’s orders, etc.
Will the staff work closely with my doctor?
Yes, Memorial Home Services home health will work very closely with your doctor to let them know how you are doing at home. Our nurses consult with your doctor before any changes are made to your plan of care.
